In a world filled with AAA titles and massive free to play shooters, games like Mina the Hollower are a refreshing take on classic gameplay tropes and creative fun that contribute to a proud legacy of culturally significant indie games. The game is set to release on PC, and news of a release date will be announced in the near future. Players will be able to use a variety of weapons, gadgets, and abilities in order to battle foes blocking Mina's progress while she solves the mystery of why her power sources are failing and discovers the cursed Isle's darkest secrets. They simultaneously opened and announced their discord, so this kickstart is a confusing/unconventional but effective way to really put their dev in front of peoples' eye.The trailer above highlights Mina the Hollower's 8-bit soundtrack, gothic world, and 60fps top-down gameplay, which should interest fans of Castlevania and old-school Zelda titles. This project looks super risky, and this move is an interesting lol pr move (their kickstarter goal, $311,503, is the EXACT amount shovel knight's gathered 9 years ago). We haven't had publishers give those graphics a chance between then and 2022 still (the only one i can mention by memory is Playism).Īs they're an established, maybe AA, studio now, they could be stuck in that weird dev space of too big to downsize for this project and too small to support multi-year dev. What publisher would fund a Links Awakening-esque game this year? We had to rely on Kickstarter to restart those simple/expressive graphics back in 2012-16 (undertale 5k(!), hyper light bloodstained 500k) rather than AAA studios. I'd say Kickstarter is not the best look but the amount is reasonable. You don't think the Kickstarter is needed? That's absolutely fine, the game isn't being held hostage, it WILL be made, so just don't back it if you feel like it's not doing anything for you.īiggest takeaway for me is Jake Kaufman is a part of another full OST. It was made only to provide long term fans an option to back it and get perks if they want. They released the Kickstarter at only $300k, obviously the game will get made. These aren't just cash grabs to have a tiny NPC only (unless that's what you want), you get to help design something that leads to major game content. Characters like Baz and Reize were made as part of the Director for a Day perk. Kickstarter perks for Shovel Knight were insane. Obviously this is not a scummy "take your money and run" company, in fact they've shown to be the exact opposite, "take your money and stay for a long long time". Shovel Knight released in 2014, then Yacht Club continued to release FREE content (entire campaigns) for 6 years after, with King of Cards releasing almost in 2020 (very end of 2019). /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creesch./r/gaming4gamers - middle ground between purely-for-fun and more serious subreddits./r/GamingLeaksAndRumours - Leaks and Rumors.Posting unmarked spoilers will result in removal and warning, and posting spoilers with malicious intent will result in a ban.
